PHILOSOPHY

MY PHILOSOPHY

We are not just what we eat, we are also what we think, believe and repeatedly do. When looking at our overall health, diet plays a major contribution as well as our environment, genetics and our spiritual, mental, emotional and physical wellbeing. Living healthy is a lifestyle, one that thrives in balance and harmony, the same way it does in nature. Eating a well balanced, nutrient dense diet is just as important as good sleep, reconnecting with nature, spending time outdoors, fresh air, having fun, being active, doing what you Love, Loving what you do, giving back and giving thanks. There is no "one shoe fits all" we are all beautifully, biochemically unique and it is about finding out what works best for you.

The Origins of Naturopathy

"Health is the expression of a harmonious balance between various components of man's nature, the environment and ways of life... nature is the physician of disease." - Hippocrates - 25 centuries ago.

Naturopathy dates back to as far as 15,000 BC where shamanic rituals of healing the mind & soul were found on cave paintings in France. Since then many people played a role in history to continue to help bring Naturopathy forward to where it is today. The term "naturopathy" was created from "natura" (Latin root for birth) and "pathos" (the Greek root for suffering) to suggest "natural healing".

The Principles of Naturopathic Nutrition

Humans were part of nature and the Universe, and health was achieved by living in accordance with this principle. Harmony was fostered with proper nutrition, water treatments, rest, sunshine and fasting. Humans were seen as a whole. Any dislocation from their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual being caused illness. The body has an incredible capacity to heal and rebalancing these aspects allow the body to naturally heal itself. Modern orthodox medicine, apart from all its positive and beneficial attributes, does not subscribe to this idea of wholism or to the importance of prevention. Some of the core principles in Naturopathic Nutrition include:

  • Prevention is preferable to cure

  • The root cause of dysfunction/illness is indentified and treated. Not just the branches (symptoms).

  • The whole person is treated and all aspects of the persons physical, mental and emotional beings are taken into account when looking at overall health.

  • Health is much greater than just "absence of infirmity". It is abundant vitality.

  • The person is treated. Not the disease.

  • The individual is unique, each person responds in a different way.

  • Disease starts with a disruption to the bodies homeostatic mechanisms and health is a return to the balance of these.

  • Ill-health is a product of the internal environment of the body more than the external influences.

  • Ailments should not be surpressed. Symptoms are there for a reason to tell us what deeper underlying issues are going on.

Naturopathic Nutrition stresses the use of whole and organic foods as medicine – an integral concept of healing in many indigenous societies. Today, we see that a return to chemical-free foods, along with other dietary measures, is an effective answer to many health complaints and common conditions.
